The school day gets more and more crowded doesn’t it? Everywhere I go I hear teachers telling me that it is becoming seemingly impossible to fit all the curriculum requirements in their day.

To assist in getting the vital literacy skills across in an overcrowded curriculum I have produced a new set of reading activities. These are arranged the usual 3 levels across the primary school ages and have short but engaging texts followed by:

Vocabulary study.

Comprehension questions that are based on Focus & Retrieve Specific information, Make a Simple inference, Integrate & Interpret and Examine, Evaluate & Respond thinking types.

Literacy skills, which include antonyms/synonyms, parts of speech, word etymology, punctuation, compound words, prefixes, homophones, contractions and acronyms.

I have also included possible answer sheets so that groups can self-mark or to save teachers time in the marking process.

Combining reading, comprehension, vocabulary study and literacy skills into one activity may make it easier for teachers to address all areas of the English curriculum.

After many requests from schools I have added 3 sets of EARLY Level comprehension texts. These are in whole page larger font size and have more illustrations. They use the questioning techniques of 4 Roles of the Reader, de Bono’s Thinking Hats and Bloom’s Taxonomy. There is a variety of interesting literary and non-literary texts and each one includes some challenging tier 2 vocabulary. I have also added sample answers for the comprehension questions to assist teachers who may have parent helpers working with their reading groups. These texts have been trialled with year 2 students and have proved very popular with the teachers and the children.

Please take a look at the Early Level Comprehension samples.
