WELCOME to LINKING TO LITERACY:
The Vital Role of Literacy Learning . . . Geraldine Norris
I know it sounds like I’m stating the obvious but I don’t think you can over-emphasise the importance of solid literacy skills. The ability to read, comprehend and shape communication underpins every curriculum area and every facet of modern life. Without adequate literacy skills the future is a limited place for many of our students.
When I was at school the teaching of literacy skills was less complex than today. There was only one medium (print) and there was little perceived need to actually challenge the printed word. It wasn’t until I got to my last two senior years at school that I was expected to form an opinion of my own about the validity of information I was exposed to.
Literacy education has moved on! As a teacher of even the youngest primary school children we are now faced with the need to facilitate and encourage students to challenge what they read, watch and hear. Literacy has taken pride of place in the way we prepare our students to face and expand our rapidly changing society.
As part of a balanced literacy program, Linking To Literacy provides a framework to assist teachers and students to engage and challenge ideas in text. Greater thinkers than I have laid the basis of a raft of thinking skills organisers that supply scaffolds to deep understanding. Bloom, de Bono, The 4 Roles of the Reader (Luke and Freebody) and the Literal, Inferential, Evaluative and Judgemental aspects of comprehension are all well respected and internationally recognised tools to assist literacy students to access and challenge ideas in text.
These are some of the strategies that are allied to short but engaging pieces of texts within the resources of Linking To Literacy.
• LINKING TO LITERACY provides educators with good quality and inexpensive resources for teaching reading comprehension and writing skills.
• The approximate age range of the resources is between 7 and 12 years.
• The reading comprehension activities are grouped as EARLY, LOWER, MIDDLE and UPPER levels and consist of sets of 10 self-contained reading and comprehension texts.
• Naturally, every student develops at a different rate, but as a “rule of thumb” the EARLY texts would typically suit year 2/3, the LOWER texts year 3/4, the MIDDLE texts year 5/6 and the UPPER texts year 6/7.
• The texts and activities provided by Linking To Literacy are Word documents and so can be reformatted to suit individual requirements.
• The activities can be printed, laminated and used for group or individual student use or used with data projection for whole class lessons.
• The writing activities are grouped as LOWER, MIDDLE and UPPER levels and are scaffolded to provide structure and ideas for “on demand” writing.
• They are easily downloaded or supplied on CD with several on-line payment options. Should you be unable to pay on-line please contact us to make other arrangements.
